Take two

Have to love Windows to Mac........

ISU Women’s tournament dreams ended in Boise with a 77 to 54 lost to the Boise State Broncos. The lost brought to an end not only the dreams of the Bengals moving on to the second round, but also the careers of Natalie Doma and Andrea Lightfoot. Even though Doma had another double-double 13 points and 17 rebounds, along with Lightfoot 16 points, it wasn’t enough to over come the lack of defensive rebounding that gave Boise State 21 points. In the rebounding department BSU out rebound ISU 66 to 44 with 21 put back points for BSU to ISU 2 points.
Coach Jon Newell said about the rebounding,” When you let someone have 27 offensive rebounds it’s hard to win the game. We do a great job defensively and force a bad shot, but don’t get the block out and give up second and third chances and that’s a part of defense.”
Shots seem to be rejected by the rims for both teams, ISU shot 25 percent from the floor with BSU shooting 31 percent for the game. The Broncos put up an astounding 85 shots towards the basket.
The physical play by BSU with the constant push for rebounds wore down the ISU team. “We were manhandled tonight all over the floor, We have to be tough we did for awhile the we backed down as a team, got to us finally and that’s when they went on the run. The frustration was just rising with every possession. Most of that crap went on, then we it beat us down.” ,said Coach Jon Newelle
The Bengals had a chance with 8:01 left in the game, Doma put in a lay up which made the score 49-44, a foul by Videbeck and a media time, slowed the pace down. After the time out Boise went on a 16 to 0 run, to end the game.
As Newell pointed out it was the rebounds that led to the Bengals demise.

The End of a Season

Put the ball though the hoop is the idea of basketball. Neither the Bengals or Broncos could get the ball though the hoops. Listening to Jerry Miller, on KISU, he kept saying," the ball hit the front of the rim, or," the ball hit the back of the rim,"
Those lines rang though the whole 40 minutes for the Bengals, shooting a miserable 25 percent for the game. The Broncos didn't shoot any better 31 percent but what made the difference was the rebounding and second shot attempts put up by the Broncos. Boise State had 21 points from their 27 offensive rebounds, to Idaho States 2 points.
The Broncos put the game away in the final eight minutes with a 16-0 run which buried the Bengals.
"When you let someone have 27 offensive rebounds it's hard to win a game. We do a great job defensively and force bad shot , but we don't get the block out and give up second and third chances, and that's part of the defense, " said Coach Jon Newell.
Playing in their last game Andrea Lightfoot scored 16 points, Natalie Doma had another double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds.
Boise State moves on to the second round of the WNIT and the Bengals get a bus ride home, proud knowing that they have once again gotten a bid to play in a post season game.

HELP !!!!!

The bottom of the list, I might take heart, looking at the winners and losers in March Madness. How do you pick a winner out of this mess?
Hope you all have a good spring break.......................

Jackson's jumper gives USD upset win over UCONN

Jason Enes
NCAA Tournament Story
March 21, 2008

Tampa- De'Jon Jackson's jumper with 1.2 seconds left on the clock in overtime and the following inbounds pass was blocked gave the University of San Diego there first ever win in the NCAA Tournament.
"I wanted it in JaDe'jon's hands," USD head coach Bill Grier said.
The number 13 seed Torereos 70-69 victory of the number 4 seed Conneticiut Huskies concluded an afternoon of upsets in Tampa Florida.
Gyno Pomere paced the Toreros with 22 points on 10 of 12 shooting and Brandon Johnson had 18 in a game that saw UCONN come out flat and USD end the first half with a 34-29 lead.
The Huskies may have an excuse when there floor leader point guard A.J. Price left the game with 9:39nleft to go in the first half. Price tweaked his knee on a drive to the basket and left the game not to return. He was taken to the locker room and diagnosed with a sprained knee.
The Toreros led by as many as 11 points in the second half but that all changed with a 4:16 scoreless streak that allowed UCONN to get within one and eventually take the lead by as many as three. Jerome Dyson hit two free throws tying the game at 60 and a last second drive to the basket by USD was unsuccessful and the game went to overtime.
"Coach talked to us about believing,' guard Brandon Johnson said. "You've just got to believe."
In overtime USD jumped out to a quick 64-60 advantage that was quickly wiped away when Pomare and Johnson fouled out for USD. Dyson hit two more free throws to give UCONN a 69-68 lead. After a timeout Jackson hit his game winning jumpshot.
Grier said it was fitting that Jackson made the shot that helped to win the game.
"He's like the guy who works in the mill," Grier said. " He goes in and punches his time card, goes to work and then punches out."
USD will next take on Western Kentucky who upset Drake on a last second three pointer on Sunday afternoon.

CBS Coverage of NCAA tournament

I must say I enjoy watching the tournament as much as the next guy but I am very irritated with CBS's coverage of the tournament. I don't like how they jump from game to game especially when you start watching one that is almost through the first half and they cut to a new game. I was watching the USC- K State game last night and with around 8 minutes left they left for the BYU Texas A&m game. Now I understand the market we live in and why they changed games It is just irriatating when you get into a game and they take it from you luckily I watched the rest of the game online and I really enjoyed watching the two best freshman play against each other.

First Impressions of the First Day

For one of the first times in my life I woke at an early hour during what I'm considering vacation time. And for what purpose? The opening round games of the NCAA tournament. To put it lightly, I was mildly pleased with the entertainment linked to the excitement involved in these first games. Belmont hung with Duke in a contest that concluded with a missed half court shot by a Belmont player to win the game. Duke held on 71-70. The highly anticipated phenom freshmen game, consisting of star guard OJ Mayo and unstoppable forward Michael Beasly was a game that I viewed as one of the most evenly matched 11 and six matchups. Beasly prevailed with 80-67 and prevented my bracket from remaining perfect for the first 16 games (15/16).

Higher seeds like Wisconsin, Stanford, Notre Dame, UCLA, Purdue, Wasington State, UNLV, Marquette, West Virginia Pittsburg, and Michigan State all moved on with convincing wins. Xavier received a momentary scare when SEC tournament champion Georgia took control in the first half. The Muskateers would put together impressive runs to take an advantage. Xavier put an end to Georgia's impressive postseason run 73-61. Big Sky representative Portland State went down in what seemed to be an easy 1-16 game against Bill Self's Kansas Jayhawks.

I was left to stress the Gonzaga Bulldogs first round game (with them not playing until Friday). Gonzaga, a seven seed, will play 22-game in a row winner (yes, like the Rockets) Davidson. Outstanding shooting guard Stephen Curry, who's averaging 25 points a game this season, will lead #23 ranked Wildcats.

And on one last thought, BSU will attempt to take down Rick Pitino's Louisville Cardinals in a 3-14 game. I don't have enough manly hairs (like my boy Phil Good) to pick an upset like this, but I will share one interesting fact with you. The Cougars of BYU, who went down today against Big 12 opponent Texas A & M (sorry prof.), beat Louisville in November and Boise State would later beat BYU 73-70.

It could happen.

NCAA Tournament Story

ANAHEIM, Calif.- Joe Crawford’s 35 points were not enough as the Golden Eagles send the Wildcats packing in the first round of the south regional.

Kentucky struggled to keep pace with a hungry Marquette squad that was desperately trying get their first win in the tournament since 2003. Joe Crawford seemed to be carrying the load for the Kentucky in the second half.

“He has done that all season,” said Kentucky Coach Billie Gillispie. "He is as clutch of a player as I have ever been around."

Crawford was quick to point out his disappointment in the loss.

"I came here to win,” said Joe Crawford. "That's what I wanted to do. So I'm just kind of sad right now because, you know, I feel like we had a good chance and I'm just kind of down right now."

The last time Marquette won a game in the tournament Dwayne Wade was on the team. That team beat Kentucky in regional final. The Golden Eagles seemed focused from the tip off; still the team needed to hit free throws down the stretch for the win.

"It's easy to make them when your whole team and coaches have this confidence in you,” said, Wesley Mathews. "It was just a matter of going up there and making them."

Kentucky lost more than the game on Thursday. This was the final game for two of the leaders on their team.

"You hate to see those guys walking out of here for the last time," Coach Gillispie said. "They've made a definite mark on Kentucky basketball.”

Rockets' Brilliant Streak Ends

The Houston Rockets 22-game win streak was snapped Tuesday night against the NBA's best team (by defense and record) the Boston Celtics. Houston hadn't lost a game since late January and were fresh off of a 12-point win at home versus the Pau Gasoless Lakers. Tracy McGrady and company have picked up the load to expand on a winning streak that many thought would surely deteriorate after all-star center Yao Ming got hurt and was projected out for the rest of the season.

On the other side, the Celtics won back-to-back games in Texas since the 1993-94 season, after beating the Spurs by two after trailing by as much as 22. They are now 22-4 against western conference teams and 54-13 overall (I know, they mathematically can't win 70 games now). Boston has been without Ray Allen, who is out with a heel injury.

There has been lots of speculation after the Rockets continued winning without Yao, mostly concerning the quality of opponents such as New Jersey, Charlotte, Atanta and the Dirkless Maves. One significant point that I thought I would highlight is the fact that they've been doing withOUT, yeah you guessed...Yao Ming. A big man who will almost surely guarentee you 20 points and 10 boards a game. But one thing you and I have to remember is that their will always be haters attempting to dampen what truly is remarkable.

2008 College Basketball Ratings Percentage Index (RPI)

This is a re-creation of the Ratings Percentage Index for NCAA men's college basketball.
The basic RPI formula is 1/4*(Winning Percentage) + 1/2*(Opponents' Average Winning Percentage) + 1/4*(Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage)

Game Story 2

This one didn't get published due to lack of space in the sports pages....but I wrote it and I think it's excellent, so I am sharing! It would've gone in the March 12 paper.

Men’s Rugby team fights for a championship

The Idaho State University Men’s Rugby Club began their season with one goal in mind, a national championship.

The Bengals began their regular season with a game against Utah State University on March 1. On a cold, wet day on their home turf, the Bengals scored a 17-5 victory over USU.

The Bengals started off the game with a score of 7-0 gained in the first 20 minutes. The score stayed the same until the second half when USU scored. USU missed the kick making the score 7-5. Toward the end of the second half Dane Ashley kicked a penalty that moved the score up to 10-5. The Bengals squeezed in one more score before the end of the game and ended the game with a 17-5 victory.

“The whole team played hard,” said Head Coach Ram Eddings. “It was a cold and wet day but both teams played very hard. I was very happy with the Bengals play.”

The National Guard, sponsors of the USA Rugby National Championships, awarded equipment kits worth $6,000 to selected colleges in the Nation. Only 300 colleges were chosen and ISU was one of the colleges selected to receive an equipment kit. The kit will include safety equipment, pads and new uniforms.

“We are very happy to have been awarded this grant,” said Eddings. “It will be a great help in our continued training for our players.”

The next home game for the Bengals Rugby Club will be held at Bartz Field on Saturday April 12 around 1 p.m. and they will face Boise State University. They will also be holding a Rugby Clinic from 7:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. on both April 11 and 12.

ISU Basketball

The game against Portland State was revealing. It was painfully obvious that the Vikings were the better team on the court. Every time the Bengals would cut the lead down the Vikings had an answer. The Bengals learned a lot in that game. They learned that they are a few pieces away from contending for a conference championship. The Bengals have already taken steps to get to that level. Kal Bay will have a huge impact at point guard next season. The effort shown by the Bengals on Tuesday is reason for optimism. Opposing teams know that a win over the Bengals is not an easy task. The team believes in the system and they are playing hard for Coach O'Brien.

Film editing Project

I had a lot of fun working on this film editing project. I learned how to go about preparing for a shoot, what I should and shot not do in editing the film, how to present it, and of course the voice over and sound levels.

What I learned is that writing the script first is a must. I learned how I should handle the camera and I should have let the camera roll longer on some shots to give me a better opportunity to tell the story.

I'm grateful for what I learned on this project and can't wait to get started on another video project.

Game Story Two

In a game that featured four technical fouls, one ejection, seven lead changes and 2,190 screaming fans, the Idaho State Bengals, lead by Logan Kinghorn’s game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds, picked up a hard fought 67-65 victory over Montana Saturday night. Despite the Grizzles connecting on 12 3-pointers (seven in the first half) and losing Donnie Carson to an ejection for pushing an opposing player, Idaho State was able to maintain the lead that they built down the stretch in the second half and advance to the second round against Portland State in the Big Sky tournament.

The Bengals fell behind quickly 11-2 to begin the game and trailed 32-26 at half, but came out on fire in the second half, shooting nearly 78 percent from the field, all while holding a 36-24 rebounding margin. Prior to the conference tournament match-up, Idaho State was an astounding 1-17 when trailing at halftime.

Idaho State displayed a balanced scoring attack, as Donnie Carson had 10 points and five rebounds, while Matt Stucki added 11 points. Austin Kilpatrick, who was sick all week, hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and three blocks. “My teammates just found me open, one the baseline and coming off a screen,” Kilpatrick would say about his 3-point conversions. “Both times they were just good looks and I felt comfortable with my release, let it go and they went in.”

Montana’s six-foot guard Matt Martin made five 3-pointers (5-for-9) and was the Grizzles’ leading scorer with 16 points. Martin was the beneficiary of a double-technical foul following a mid-court conflict with Donnie Carson. Carson was ejected from the game with 1:48 remaining, leaving his team with a six-point lead 61-55.

Down seven with 39 seconds remaining, Andrew Strait’s lay-up cut the Bengal lead to 64-59. Expecting to foul following the basket, Montana was instead awarded with a Kilpatrick turnover. Matt Martin would nail a pull-up 3-pointer with 14 seconds left making it 64-62. Matt Stucki would then make two free throws to extend the Bengal lead to four. After a Grizzle missed three, Demetrius Monroe would make one of two free throws to close out the game. Cameron Rundles would connect on another 3-pointer at the buzzer, but all too little too late.

Grizzles’ head coach Wayne Tinkle said after the game, “We didn’t defend as well as we should have the second half, we didn’t rebound the whole game. They played a lot more physical than we did and I think that’s where we lost the game.”

Your NCAA Tournament Guide

As the sun slowly melts the snow away, I gently prod aside my studies for a greater love: the NCAA tournament. The men’s division I basketball tournament, also known as March Madness (taking place predominately in March), is a 65 team tournament held each spring. This 3-week tournament, which began in 1939, takes place at sites across the United States working its way to the national semifinals. This publicly acclaimed sporting event has grown to be bigger and more anticipated every year.

Several circumstances such as team rankings, RPI (ratings percentage index), and wins and losses determine whether a team goes to the tournament and what they may be seeded. Teams who win their conference tournament (held after the regular season) receive automatic bids to the tournament. The Ivy League is an exception because they don’t hold a conference tournament. Instead, the regular season champion receives the automatic bid. If a team fails to win their conference tournament, they hope that their regular season resume is good enough to receive an at-large bid. Winning your conference tournament grants a team a right to the tournament, whereas an at-large bid offers a team an invitation.

Out of the 65-team bracket, 31 of the teams receive automatic births, while the remaining 34 teams are given at-large bids. At-large bids aren’t considered lesser teams than the conference winners; they just failed to play well enough during a specific period of time. The selection committee that determines what teams go and what teams are left evaluate a team and how they played throughout the entire season. The six BCS conferences (Pac-10, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC, SEC) are known to get many of the at-large births. Most marquee schools like UCLA, UConn, and UNC don’t win their conference tournaments, but are still highly considered in being selected.

There is often much controversy concerning what teams are most deserving of going to the Big Dance (another name for the NCAA tournament). This makes the selection process a grueling one because there are often more teams deserving than are allowed to go. The brackets are revealed and are nationally televised on Selection Sunday, aired on CBS the Sunday before the tournament (the tournament begins on a Thursday). The bracket consists of four regions, each holding 16 seeds. If you happen to fill out a bracket, here are some facts to consider: no 16 seed has beaten a one seed, there has never been a case where all four number one seeds made the semi-finals (final four), and since the tournament’s existence, there have been only two years (1980 and 2006) in which a number one seed failed to make the final four.

For many, this event is more than just a tournament; it’s a tradition. It’s the essence in failing grades for all teenage basketball crazed boys in March. It’s where you’ll hear me ask the question, “Hey, can I get your economics notes?”

Underdog Upsets Zags

The underdog University of San Diego men's basketball team upset number 22 Gonzaga last night to win the West Coast Conference tournment and the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. The Toreros had a 19-4 run in the second half to overtake the Zags and win 69-62. USD was the number 3 seed in the WCC tourney played in there home gym in San Diego where the night befoe the beat the number 2 seed St. Marys in double overtime for the right to play the number 1 seed Gonzaga. The Bulldogs had won the last 4 WCC titles are more than likely going to be in the tournament but it will be intersting to see if a small conference like the WCC will get three teams in this year St. Mary's won 25 games and was ranked for awhile this season. Great job USD and good luck in the big dance.

Game Story 1

The ISU men’s and women’s track teams both finished fourth in the Big Sky Conference indoor track and field championships held this past weekend at Holt Arena.
Idaho State’s Cassie Merkley won two championships on day one of the meet and propelled her Bengal women teammates to first place at the end of day one.
Merkley’s win in the pentathlon was a record breaker. She broke her own Big Sky Conference record that was set last year by scoring 3894 points a score that was also the fifteenth best score posted in the nation this year. Merkley’s teammate Sydney Wendt finished second in the pentathlon and the high jump behind Merkley. On the men’s side the only title on day one was in the Distance Medley Relay and the men finished the day with 29.5 points.
Day two of the event saw the Bengals nab eleven all conference selections led by Saheed Kahn who picked up two silvers in the mile and the 800 meters and a gold in the Distance Medley Relay with teammates Eric Stroud, Zac Barnett and John Ricardi.
Brad Sylvester won the heptathlon by 11 points over Sacramento State’s Robert Brazier and ISU’s Levi Keller finished third in the heptathlon and the pole vault. Levi’s brother Jacob also won a bronze medal by tying for third in the high jump.
The winners of this year's Big Sky indoor championships were the Sacramento State Hornets. The Hornets won the title on the men’s side in very close fashion by eclipsing Weber State by one point. The women won by a considerable margin.
The Bengals will now look forward to a last chance meet this weekend before the NCAA Championships March 14-15 in Fayeteville Arkansas.

Game day two

Pocatello, Id---Idaho State Women’s Basketball team captured 2nd place in the Big Sky conference by defeating Weber State, 81-69. The win gave the Bengal’s a first round bye in the Big Sky tournament.

On senior day, Natalie Doma contributed 32 points and 15 rebounds, along with Andrea Lightfoot 17 points, leading the Bengals to victory over Weber State, closing out their careers at Reed Gym on a winning note.

The Bengals (20-8, 12-4 BSC) will now travel to Missoula for the conference tournament; with the lost the Wildcats are eliminated and ended their season. (12-16, 6-10 BSC) This is the best conference record for Jon Newlee since joining the Begnals.

Weber State started the game on an 8-2 run before Andrea Lightfoot hit a 2 pointer along with the floor, which started a 25-5 run taking control of the game, the Wildcats never got closer than four points after that opening run.  Doma lead the charge with 12 of the 25 points.

Idaho States bench helped the cause, with Devin Diehl scoring nine points, Jenna Brown also scored nine points and had five assists. Michelle Grohs and Oana Iacovite were the other Begnals scoring seven points each. Iacivite had a career high three blocks.

Doma and Lightfoot received standing ovation when they when they were taken out of the game in the final minutes. Before the game all three seniors Doma, Lightfoot and Kaylynn Fager were present a plaque with their jersey framed in it.

Rumors ...........

Fun place to read all the rumors about the Bubba  actually it another blog thats interesting....not that our blog isn't interesting. A person of interest told me about the site.........Jim

Game Story Two

Walks in the fifth inning were all Western Nevada needed to beat the CSI Golden Eagles on Saturday. The Eagles were able to split the day losing the first game 10-6 and winning the second 4-3. Game one started off with a hitting showdown as the Wildcats put up four runs in the first inning. The Eagles answered back with two runs of their own. Until the fifth inning both teams were in a stalemate of scoring. The Coyotes scored five runs in the fifth inning off just three hits. "we gave them a lot of runners," head coach Boomer Walker said. "I'm surprised they only got 10 runs on us. "Usually if you get that many guys base, you're going to score 15." From then on the Eagles could only play catch-up. The pitching staff continued to struggle giving up walk after walk. The Eagles used five different pitchers in the game. Despite scoring three runs in the seventh, it wasn't enough for the Eagles to come back.

Game Story One

Despite valiant efforts, the Idaho State mens' track team was only able to capture fourth place in the 2008 Big Sky Indoor Track Championships. Brad Silvester came up big winning one of only two gold medals for ISU. Silvester won the men's heptathlon with a score of 5073, only eleven points ahead of second. The other lone medal came from the men's distance medley. Saheed Kahn, Eric Strand, Zac Barrett, and John Ricardi ran a time of 10:07 beating second place by five full seconds. Sam Pierson played a role in pole vaulting taking fifth and adding points for Idaho State. "It's all about feeling it," Pearson said, " It's about having a free mind and focusing your body warmth towards your jump." The competition for Big Sky Track looks to be fierce for the next couple of years. "The competition has always been good," Pierson said, "look forward for the outdoor season. The athletes feel it more and compete harder." The Bengals are already in training for the outdoor season and this year looks to be their best to compete for another Big Sky Championship.

Hockey World Championships

Coming up in the first week of March Canada will host the IIHF World Championships for hockey. I'm looking very forward for this time because if I can raise a grand more I'm going to watch them. I have family in Quebec and would give anything for tickets. There are 16 teams competing and the tournament will last 16 days. Canada looks to be a huge powerhouse as well as Russia. It's always a great competition when these two teams compete. I'm looking forward to watch these games and hope to see Canada vs USA in Quebec.

CSI Baseball

This weekend I went to the CSI baseball game. They were blown out their first game due to lots of walks. Their second game was better but squeaked by winning by one. As a younger kid I went to the CSI camp in the winter four different years. Even though they are a JUCO team, they are amazing. Skip and Boomer walker know their ball and helped improve my skills so much. It's cool to be older and watch the team who helped me to become a better ball play. I hope they can have an amazing season and bring home another championship.

apologies

my apologies to Phil. But to the individual who thought they were funny about Bubb they werent. While I have a tendency to believe he must have done something wrong as the school would not suspend him this close to the post season without cause. He's also been quite mum too. But then with the recent congressional hearings and the tour de france debacle it's hard to believe anyone is telling the truth because no matter what the accusation every one is denying wrong doing. But either way if you don't have the guts to put your name to something I don't want it on our blog.

Go Bengals.

I enjoyed the women's game and it was my kids first game. We had a lot of fun. Have a great weekend. Don't forget to change your clocks.

ISU Athletic Director Paul Bubb has been put on paid administrative leave.

The athletic department was informed this morning at 10 o'clock Assistant Director Jeff Tingey would be the Acting Athletic Director.

An investigation is underway; no other information was released.

About Paul Bubb-

Bubb is in his third full year as the Director of Athletics for Idaho State University, and he brings with him a breadth of knowledge culled from an athletic administrative career that spans both coasts of America as well as the borders of Idaho. Bubb comes to Pocatello highly respected among regional and national circles.

Paul came to Idaho State as the Assistant Athletic Director for Development in August of 2003 from the University of Maine, where he served as both Interim Athletic Director and Senior Associate Athletic Director. Within a year at Idaho State he was promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director.

As Director of Athletics, Paul has overseen the successful implementation of P.A.W.S. (Proud Athletes Working and Serving), a program which has vastly improved ISU's student-athlete community outreach efforts. He also has seen three conference titles in his first 15 months, and is currently working with architects, university administration, and community focus groups to help implement ISU's Facilities Master Plan, which was to be unveiled in the summer of 2006

As ISU's Sr. Associate Athletic Director, Bubb oversaw the areas of media relations, development, corporate sales, marketing, promotions and fiscal affairs. In just six short months the corporate sales program grew from $360,000 in partnerships to over $500,000. An additional $380,000 in trade agreements had Bengal Sport Properties generating just under $900,000 for the first time in school history. In 2006, Bengal Sport Properties surpassed the $1 million mark.

Before coming to Idaho State, Bubb spent the previous two years at the University of Maine as the Sr. Associate Athletic Director and the Interim Athletic Director. Under Bubb's guidance as the Interim Athletic Director, Maine teams excelled both on and off the court. More student-athletes were recognized as Scholar-Athletes than ever before, and Maine teams won or shared conference championships in the sports of football, baseball, women's basketball, and women's field hockey. Bubb directed new fund raising and building initiatives that included a new baseball and softball concession and service facility and the lead gift in a major facility campaign to expand the Alfond Arena with new team locker rooms, coaches' offices, ticket operations and a Hall of Fame concourse.

In addition to heading up the development operations at Idaho State and Maine, Bubb has been responsible for direct oversight or serving on the athletic development programs at Southern Illinois University, Drake University, Cal State Northridge, and Boise State University. At Boise State Bubb implemented a new Scholarship Seating Program that helped take the Broncos from raising just over $900,000 in 1999 to over $1.3 million in three years.

Bubb served Cal State Northridge as the Director of Athletics from July 1995 until November 1998. In his first year as Athletic Director he led the Matadors into the Big Sky Conference and quickly saw Northridge develop as a major force in the league. A majority of Northridge's 20 teams finished in the top third of their respective conference races within the first three years and non-Big Sky sports at Northridge also excelled. Softball advanced to the College World Series, baseball advanced to the NCAA Division I regionals, and men's volleyball consistently ranked among the Top Ten in the nation. Bubb directed major renovations to Matador Gymnasium, Matador Field (softball) and Matador Diamond (baseball). All new scoreboards were installed for baseball, softball, basketball and football under Bubb's direction. The university also received a cash gift of $500,000 from a corporate partner in 1995, the largest cash corporate gift in the university's history at the time.

Bubb holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Monmouth College (IL) and earned his master of science degree in Sport Management at Western Illinois University. Born on January 9, 1957 in Macomb, Illinois, Bubb was married to Susan Lynn Oaks on October 5, 1985 in Monmouth. The couple has one daughter, Kallan Michelle, born June 1, 1994.

About Jeff Tingey-

Jeff Tingey is in his first year as Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Corporate Sales, bringing with him a vast amount of experience from both the Mountain West and the Big Sky Conference.

As the Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Corporate Sales, Tingey oversees all Bengal Sport Properties and ISU's corporate partner program and he provides leadership and oversight for marketing and promotions. He will also serve as a member of the senior staff for the athletic department.

Tingey had spent the previous year at Brigham Young, where he handled the marketing profile for football, coordinating game-day presentation, scripts, and pre and post-game activities for the football team. Jeff also oversaw the marketing profiles for men's volleyball, women's soccer, women's basketball, softball, golf, cross country, and track and field. Tingey also coordinated many athletic department special events and trade accounts.

Jeff graduated from Weber State University, where he ran track for two years, from 2000-2002. While there, he worked as an intern in the Weber State marketing department, and was then hired as the Assistant Marketing Director after graduating, staying there for four years. While with the Wildcats, he was responsible for the marketing and promotions for women's soccer, volleyball, and basketball, and he also handled a variety of special events for the Wildcats, including the football tailgate party and Big Sky Conference Tournaments. He and his wife Amber have one son, Ammon.

Bubb placed on paid leave

Athletic director Paul Bubb was placed on paid administrative leave on Thursday for an indefinite period of time, Idaho State administrators confirmed.

No reason was given for the action.

''It's a personnel action. We'll wait and see,'' said Idaho State President Arthur Vailas. ''I'm not allowed to disclose a reason at this time. It is not termination.''
Jeff Tingey ascended to the role of acting athletic director. Tingey is the assistant athletic director for marketing and corporate sales.

''He has all kinds of training,'' Vailas said of Tingey. ''For this emergency situation, he's the best person.''

The following are comments from the readers. In no way do they represent the view of our paper.

Mike Canada wrote on Mar 6, 2008 8:07 PM:

" He should never have been hired based on his past. ISU just keeps going after the ring, but never work to get there. "

Nate wrote on Mar 6, 2008 8:31 PM:

" You can blame Richard Bowen for this hire. Jim Senter quit after, what, a year on the job? Senter had hired Bubb as his right hand man (I have heard he hired Bubb for the brawn, Senter was the brain). Bowen should have conducted another search, but he chose not to. There are some great candidates out there, so I hope ISU conducts a national search. If somebody inhouse gets it after the search, so be it. But don't settle. "

Bubye Bubb

I was just logging on and going to check the websites to see if the Bubb rumor was true and it looks like an old dog beat me to the post.

Jim that is what you missed in class today, we talked about the potential firing of Bubb and how the information came from an unknown but so said reliable source. It looks like the University has taken the first step to dismissal. I'm sure they are going to use the time he is on "official leave" to try and convince him that it is in everyone's best interest to have him resign and move on. If it is a personal matter such as what we discussed in class then I"m sure we'll never know the true reason he was let go or asked to quit but will be left to forever speculate.

The other reason I wanted to blog tonight is that we failed to look at this topic completely from the journalistic side we stayed true to form of the topic of the day of public relations and looked at it from how ISU was going to deal with it.

What I am is asking is that everyone respond to this post and list what you would do next as a reporter if you had been the one to get the scoop and hear the Bubb was being fired. What would you do next as a sports reporter assigned to this story? I look forward to your replies.

Paul Bubb ?

What did the good old boy do now ?

Will this hurt the basketball teams, chances in the up coming games? I hope not both teams deserve the best playing chance..........................

Arsenal blanks AC Milan 0-2

In the European Cup two days ago Arsenal shocked the world by beating AC Milan. AC Milan a team from Italy was said to be the best in the world. In their first match the teams had a draw. I'm not a very big soccer fan, but I like the European league. It's the worlds best athletes playing each other; country against country. It was cool to see a small team like Arsenal beat the powerhouse. I like rooting for the underdog so it was an exciting game.

Bengals struggle in Mesquite

For the second straight year the Bengals struggled at the Fling into Spring tournament hosted in Mesquite, Nevada. They went 1-3 over the weekend with loses to UC-Santa Barbara, Eastern Washington, and Central Oregon CC. Their lone win came against UC-Colorado Springs with a score of 13-10. The season is early for the Bengals and there is still lots of ball to be played. I hope the team can get better so they can make a run at regionals again this year.

Farve finally decides to hang it up

Bret Farve finally decided to quit screwing with the Packers offseason plans and announced his reitrement Tuesday. Now i am by no means a Packer or Farve fan but I think that he will go down in NFL history as one of the best ever to play the game. He broke most of Marino's passing records and even though he only won one Super Bowl that will not tarnish his legacy. It will be interesting to see how his departure will effect the Packers this season because their backup Aaron Rodgers doesn't strike me as the future of the Packers franchise.

Disappointing effort does the Bengals in.

Phillip Campbell
March 3, 2008
Game Story 1

The Bengals lose to the Big Sky doormat thanks to a lackluster effort.

The rollercoaster ride continued on Thursday as the Bengals again demonstrated their lack of consistency for playing good basketball. The Bengals didn’t look like a team riding a three game winning streak. They lacked effort and trailed most of the ballgame.
The sudden lack of effort by the Bengals surprised everyone especially their coach.

“It’s unexpected, unacceptable and it doesn’t frustrate me, it really makes me mad,” said Coach O’Brien.

The Bengals came into the game on a three game winning streak. Their only game this week was against Northern Colorado. Coach O’Brien gave the team a few days off and lowered the intensity of practice in preparation for the Bears.

“I don’t understand our lack of energy and our lack of execution and our lack of commitment,” said Coach Obrien. “I apologize to our fans that were here tonight and have gotten excited about what we have done over the course of the past couple of weeks. That performance is just totally unacceptable. It’s totally unexpected and it’s back to the drawing board.”

The players shared the frustration in the loss. Matt Stucki who is one the leading scorers on the team struggled to score just three points.

“I think a lot of the time the effort is there, said Matt Stucki.” Were trying and there’s a lot of mental breakdowns that we had. Whether it’s switching and picking up at the right places or not boxing out it’s just little things like that we work on in practice. I think everyone is trying, trying our hardest but it’s just we got to eliminate those mental breakdowns.”

Donnie Carson felt like the team lacked energy from the start.

“We didn’t bring our hard hats and lunch pales,” said Donnie Carson.” We didn’t execute like we were supposed to.”

A win would have set up a first place showdown in Portland next week. With just three weeks left the Bengals will have to pick up the pieces quickly if they want to contend for a conference championship.

“ We’ve got a week now before we play at Portland State and we are going to do whatever it takes to find that basketball team that left here last Saturday night and failed to show up tonight,” said Coach Obrien. “The things we hang our hat on we didn’t even pretend to do tonight.”

What is the cost?

I found it interesting to read the commentary by Kellis Robinet in Sundays Urinal. He wants Idaho State athletics department to spend money  on technology. WOW, Boise State, University of Idaho both have whistle packs that stop the clock when they (the whistle) are blown...... mmm why would ISU need anything like that, O, on the off chance that they might be in a close game. ( which happens every leap year). Might cost a few bucks that the athletics dept  don't have to spend...because they are short 900,000 dollars.

He calls for spending more money........" Starting next season every school in the Big Sky should be required to have live in game footage available for referees even if the contest isn't be televised........ MORE MONEY TO SPEND to have the Mass Comm students provide that coverage with state of the art equipment. At the cost 1,000 dollars a game. WOW two  benefits from that 1,000 dollars instant reply for the referees, and mass comm students learn how to produce and set-up a  live sports broadcast............its a learning experience provided by ISU to ISU students........OH my god a real life work experience..................

Big Sky Conference Track

I attended the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track Championships this weekend at Holt this weekend and I have to say there is so much going on it was hard to keep track of what was happening. Now granted I don't know much about track and field so following all that was happening was hard enough and I didn't understand all the ways the events were scored but it was extremely fun to watch. The athletes from all of the schools involved were very vocal in supporting their fellow teammates and each team definately had a character or two that would be there to pump up the crowd. Even though the Bengals did not win the conference championship (that honor went to Sacramento State on both sides) it was an intersting way to spend a weekend and I definately have a lot of respect for those athletes that compete in those events because I know there is no way that I could do what they do.
